Change is Destructive and Can be Good*

Change requires that something be different and that means something is being destroyed by being replaced.

That being replaced could have been thought of as being good, by those making the rules, at an earlier time. Women’s lower political status, slavery and prohibition are aspects of life in America, which at the time of adaption, were believed to be in the country’s best interest. More recently, equal voting rights, fair employment and being able to openly buy and sell liquor are now the norm.

Being woke is fine, if the change being advocated or embraced is one which appreciates the motivation, mistaken though it may have been, of those enacting and enforcing that being changed and destroyed. Just because it was previously in force doesn’t make it currently bad. All that has gone before isn’t currently in need of change.

Greatest good for greatest number, continues to be a valid test for the good. However, consideration in making such a determination must consider the possible harm if any, to those having accepted that being subject to replacement. Modification or a period for readjustment seems reasonable in the case of many changes.

Having the option to create change is a great strength for individuals and for entities and that is the ultimate power. Being rich is having broader options than those who are poor. Being adult is having greater power and therefore options, and the related responsibilities, than those who are younger and otherwise dependent.

Change is good if it results in an improvement, and the cost benefit is positive. Change is not good if it disadvantages many for the benefit of a few.
